Mission Hospital has been serving the greater needs of the south Orange County community for nearly 40 years, improving the quality of life in the communities it serves. Mission Hospital provides access to advanced care and advanced caring through two convenient locations, Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach. Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo is an acute care, full-service facility providing the most advanced healthcare services and diagnostic care to south Orange County. One of only three designated trauma centers in the county, the 552-bed hospital offers 24-hour emergency care and specialized services through its Mission Imaging Center, Mission Heart Center, Mission Stroke Center, Mission Maternity Center and Mission Women's Wellness Center. The hospital also offers the highest level of care in orthopedics, rehabilitation, cancer, spine and vascular services. Mission Hospital Laguna Beach's healthcare services include 24-hour emergency, intensive and medical-surgical care as well as behavioral health including psychiatric services and chemical and pain medication dependency treatment. CHOC Children's at Mission Hospital, a separately licensed pediatric hospital on the Mission Viejo campus, serves as the only dedicated pediatric hospital in south Orange County.
A member of the St. Joseph Health System, Mission Hospital is one of 14 not-for-profit hospitals sponsored by the St. Joseph Health Ministry.

At Mission Hospital, we aspire to many things. Resting on our laurels isn't one of them.
That being said, a number of landmark achievements over the past year deserve special mention, such as acquiring a second campus, Mission Hospital Laguna Beach, and opening a new 94,000-square-foot patient care tower. It has indeed been an extraordinary year of remarkable care. While there is much to accomplish in the year ahead, there is also much to celebrate as we look back.

Through Mission Integration, we incorporate the mission and values of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange into our day-to-day operations. Affiliated physicians, nurses and staff provide care based upon and integrated with the St. Joseph Health System's core values of Dignity, Service, Excellence and Justice. As such, caring for our patients goes beyond treating physical needs; emotional and spiritual needs are of equal importance in the healing process. We believe care should be as individualized as the patients themselves. And on a larger scale, caring goes beyond the hospital walls and into the community, where we seek to extend our healing ministry to the poor and vulnerable.

Sacred Spaces
- A 45-seat chapel and Schumacher Healing Garden – both designed with the family and patient in mind – provide a peaceful setting to relax. These are open to all individuals seeking comfort or reflection.
SpiritualCare
Mission Hospital ministers to the needs of the whole person through chaplains and volunteers who are trained to provide holistic spiritual care to persons of all religious faiths, and those without any religious affiliation.
- Available for pastoral counseling, crisis intervention, prayer, and bereavement counseling.
- Mission Hospital's NODA ("No One Dies Alone") outreach program assures that no patient will die without the comfort of a compassionate presence when a loved one cannot be present. Over the past three years, 215 volunteers have spent 607 hours at the bedside of 33 patients.
- Mission Hospital supports each patient in deciding the care they wish to receive, especially when they cannot voice it themselves. Advanced Directives include protocols that give seriously ill patients greater dignity than ever before. Through a program known as Five Wishes, patients can decide:
- Who makes care decisions for them when they can't
- The kind of medical treatment they wish to receive
- How comfortable they want to be
- How they want people to treat them
- What they want their loved ones to know.
- An estimated 5,000 copies of Five Wishes were distributed to patients in FY10
Personnel Programs
- Values in Action Awards
Each year, our Values in Action program allows staff, physicians and volunteers to recognize coworkers for their efforts in incorporating our core values of Excellence, Justice, Dignity and Service into their daily routine. This year, we received over 1,300 nominations for 774 employees. A panel of judges selected four individuals that best exemplified these values.- Excellence—Cherie Fox, RN, BSN, CCRN—Cherie managed the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) in an interim capacity for eight months. She took advantage of every training opportunity and learned new managerial skills that contributed to her success in meeting and exceeding the needs of her patients, fellow nurses and coworkers.
- Justice—George B. Avila, MURP, Manager Healthy Communities, Mission Integration—George is an advocate for two Mission Hospital initiatives—the CHEC Family Resource Center and affordable housing. He tirelessly goes out into the community to identify the needs of the most vulnerable to help them have a voice and receive the justice they deserve.
- Dignity—Lars Galuppo, Director, Mission Construction—Lars oversaw construction of the four-story, 122-bed patient care tower, interacting with thousands of stakeholders and approaching every situation with sensitivity to others.
- Service—Long Pham, Senior Business Analyst, Information Technology Services—Long is admired for his out of the box IT solutions to improve patient care and safety. His positive attitude and commitment to service allows everyone to do their job more efficiently. Long also won the St. Joseph Health System award for Service.
- NODS is a service standard for each staff member to give their Name, Occupation and Duty with a Smile when they enter a patient's room so they know who they are and what they are there for. This program eases the strain of a hospital stay and creates a more positive patient experience.
- Personnel Orientation
- In FY10, 344 employees and 137 contract individuals went through Welcome Orientation Week (WOW) to learn about the history, heritage, job-related policies and functions, and other hospital-related initiatives to ensure ongoing quality of care. This important program ensures each new member of the Mission Family has the tools they need to deliver on our mission in their daily work
